Characters will have a number of skill points with which to flesh out their background skills. Skill Rolls are figured under the formula [(Trait/5) + 9], and the Skill point formula can be found at the top header of the Background Skills Sheet. According to the formula of [(Trait/5) + 9], a character with a 12 INT has a base roll of 11 or less on a d20 with INT-based skills, and a 13 INT has a 12 or less. Skill Ranks give the character the Base Roll, plus ranks. No ranks, no base roll. Characters get one rank per skill point, within limits (see below), and skill rolls will be noted in the style of Skill then Ranks / Roll (example, Agriculture, 1/13). A character with Agriculture of 1/13 (skill rank plus base) succeeds on a 13 or less, while a character with the same INT but without the skill has a 9 or less. Characters always will have a (Base Roll - 3) penalty to untrained skill use, with a minimum roll of 8 or less if they are PCs. Maximum Ranks in any given skill are determined by character age and education. Characters have a maximum of 3 ranks in any skill, 5 with one single Favored Skill. Skill Synergies are situational modifiers upon applications of certain skills. For example, a character with three skills in the Science Group is attempting to figure out a Psychopharmacology problem, but she has Biology (Humanoid) 2/16, Chemistry 3/17 and Toxicology 1/15. The GM agrees that she then can use her average skill roll (in this case a 2/16) to simulate trained use of Psychopharmacology, since her three existing skills all figure into that scientific discipline. |
